BIOGRAPHY
Greg Gilroy has been a staple of the tri-state independent music scene since the early 90's, founding one of CT's premier rap-metal hybrids Product of Society which were signed to Mascot Records in Europe and toured with dozens of national acts within the US at such legendary places as CBGB, LimeLight, The Axis and many more. for the 90’s through the 2000’s greg began cutting his teeth not only with POS, but a number of other bands such as Rockarazzi!, Brady Bastards (his first foray into signing and writing his own material) and The dalliance
it was only after The Dalliance disbanded, Greg decided after years, even decades of unhealthy living to pursue his own solo career, releasing his debut album "HEAL" in 2015 independently, cleaning up his act and losing over 70 pounds in the process.
At the end of 2017, Greg released his sophomore effort "Elephants Bury Their Dead" which dealt with the struggles he had within the 2 years since releasing HEAL after being diagnosed with severe anxiety and depression in early 2016. With a heavier, more guitar driven sound than HEAL, Greg's autobiographical lyric writing spoke honestly about learning to bury those elephants in the room and move on.
Greg's third full length album "Glamour & Filth" released in September 2018 was a big departure, laying off some of the distorted sounds and focusing more on a cleaner, more retro 80’s type alternative sound, with the theme of human sexuality and kink. To quote Greg “I wanted this to be my version of The Cure’s Wish mixed with Prince’s "Purple Rain”. although the album’s subject matter seemed “off putting” to some fans and crowds, it was the track “Sweetner” which was a song not released as a single that resonated the most with listeners and gave greg one of his highest streamed songs to this day.
After releasing “All the Clams..LIVE!” the following year in 2019 to document the set for the album release party for “Glamour..” Greg decided that the sum of the whole with his “backing band” The Critically Ashamed became greater than just himself, so The Critically Ashamed became a “proper band” recording their first self-titled album as a unit later that year, with plans to release and play extensively in 2020 with their new found growing fan base.
Then….COVID struck.
sidelined by the growing pandemic, the Critically Ashamed did still release their debut in May 2020 but the prospects of performing and rehearsing live was put on hold STILL to this day. the only bright side greg could see in this darkness was that being stuck at home with access to a home recording studio? Greg could lock himself in the dungeon of his studio, write, write and write., work on his recording skills and upgrade his recording equipment.
what followed was his 2020 solo album “Hooper” which dons the cover of a fisher price Mr Hooper figure greg took a picture of when he was 6 years old and has the most eclectic tracks of his catalog. ranging from the acoustic, almost ballad driven songs like “Just Right” and “Meet me when Springtime ends”, to the hard hitting, basic distorted rockers like “Believe (In the Book of u and me)” to “Tastes like Paste”
with the pandemic still looming and the state of live music still unclear 2021, greg continues to record and perform on his own, releasing yet another full length release “Cigarettes & Sorrow” in May 2021 which he dubs “the hardest album i ever had to write, but also the most rewarding”.
Whether it’s with his beloved band mates in The Critically Ashamed, or in the basement on his own Greg Gilroy still has a lot to say.
